Tips for Travelling Through Europe in a Motorhome

In the UK, we are lucky enough to be just a stone’s throw from the continent, which itself contains a multitude of countries offering incredible scenery, wonderful people, and delicious food – and what better way to discover and enjoy all Europe has to offer than a motorhome?

Motorhomes are a fantastic way to explore whilst still having some of your creature comforts on board with you. From a cosy place to rest your head, to the perfect spot from which to see some spectacular views, your motorhome can be the perfect partner for your next adventure.

So, how can you be sure that your journey overseas will be a safe one? Well, apart from having comprehensive motorhome insurance in place, there are a few tips to consider before you get on the road.

Make sure you have EU motorhome insurance in place

Before you even set foot in your motorhome, you need to know you have the right insurance coverage in place. The last thing you want on your holiday is for an event to occur for which you are not covered by your insurance. Not only will this mean you are left out of pocket, but the inconvenience can take up valuable time that should be spent enjoying yourself.

It is highly recommended that you talk to your broker before you plan your trip to make sure your motorhome is covered for continental journeys.

However, if you do not own a motorhome and are planning on renting one when you get across the channel, you need to double and triple check all the inclusions and exclusions that make up a motorhome insurance policy.

Think of places you want to visit before you go

Of course, one of the best-loved features of owning or renting a motorhome for a European adventure is the ability to be spontaneous and make things up as you go along. While this is a wonderful part of motorhome ownership, you should still have a basic itinerary with a list of all the countries and areas you want to visit.

Your itinerary can be changed and amended at any time – maybe you want to stay a couple of extra nights in France, or you might want to power through and cancel one of your stops – you can do whatever you want, but it’s a good idea to have a plan outlined so you don’t end up losing time where it counts.

Learn the rules of the places you want to go

It’s a good idea to brief yourself on the rules, regulations, and customs of the places you intend to visit. Every country is different and, as such, have different rules and customs that you need to be aware of, from how to use the road legally to making sure you are not parking in the wrong place, thereby upsetting any locals.

It might be daunting at first, particularly if you have never driven abroad before. Learn the rules before you go and stay calm. Driving safely and within the speed limit is the best way to not only stay safe but also enjoy the scenery around you!

Stay connected to everything

In today’s world, keeping a healthy Wi-Fi connection is important. Not only will it help you share your journey with friends and family on social media, you will also be able to stay connected to the world around you.

If you break down and need to contact roadside assistance, or you get into an accident and need to contact your motorhome insurance company, or you might just want to check out the local restaurant listings for the next leg of your journey. Either way, ensuring you have a good network provider that offers you good 4G coverage while you are in the EU is a good option.

Step up your security

The last thing you want to happen when you’re on a much-needed holiday is for your motorhome to be broken into. Not only is there a chance of the whole vehicle being stolen, but there is also the chance your personal possessions will be taken, and your motorhome vandalised.

Whilst your motorhome insurance will cover the costs of repairs or replacement items, it does not help you in the here and now. The best thing to do is check all the security features of your motorhome before you set off and add any and all extra bits of tech you can find to make it harder to break into. For example, a good alarm system will stop thieves from sneaking in and a tracking system will enable you to find out where your motorhome has been taken in the event of theft.

Europe encompasses hundreds of stunning locations, each one as different and exciting as the next. You can enjoy every inch of it with proper preparation and research, meaning you’ll have safe and happy journey no matter where you choose to go.
