Silom Photo Diary

views

We see lots of interesting and quirky things around Silom, so this is a photo diary of what we see. It’s just a way for us to be able to look back and reminisce. We’ll keep updating this page when we find interesting things to add.

Rats

Rats seem to be important for Hindus, but I have no idea why. You see lots of rats like the ones above at Hindu shrines. These rats were on sale at a shop opposite Sri Maha Mariamman Hindu Temple on Pan Road.

Garlands At Sri Maha Mariamman Hindu Temple

These garlands were for sale opposite the temple, which you can see in the background.

Windmills

The word Silom means windmill. Si is the Thai word for four, and lom is the Thai word for wind. So it literally means 4 winds, which is a windmill. In the old days there were lots of windmills in the Silom area, which is how it got its name. There are lots of windmills, like that above, on the wall of the old tennis club on Soi Sri-Vieng Road.

Elephant Statues

This elephant statue is also depicted on the same wall as the above windmill design is on.

United States Postal Service Box

We saw this on Surawong Road. It’s traveled a very long way. I wonder how and why it got here.

Chinese Signs

Lots of the shophouses in Silom have Chinese signs of some sort or another. The area is well known for its influx of Chinese immigrants many decades ago.

Cats

We see lots of cats in this area. This one was wearing a “cone of shame” and resting under a car.

Colorful Tyres

This is in the heart if Silom. Just something to brighten up the area.
