A Day Out In Monkey City, Lopburi, Thailand

Lopburi makes for a very easy day trip from Bangkok, and is one we made recently. Trains are convenient and cheap and you’ll have plenty of time to see all the sights. For most people this means seeing the monkeys that live in the town. Lopburi’s nickname is Monkey City Thailand. If you plan to stay longer click here to book a hotel or guesthouse in Lopburi.

Getting From Bangkok To Lopburi

For a day trip from Bangkok, we’d suggest getting the 08:30 train that arrives in Lopburi around 10:30. That will give you 7 hours in the city if you get the 17:28 train back to Bangkok. See Bangkok to Lopburi by train for full details of our journey.

Getting To Your Hotel

If you want to travel in style to your hotel you can hire one of these samlors from outside the train station. For a short distance they will cost around 30 baht (under $1).

The Monkeys

The area around the train station is where you’ll see most of the monkeys. They wander around freely and aren’t confined to an specific place.

This monkey has found a packet of snacks and is making a real mess.

These monkeys aren’t shy. If they think you have food they will come right up to you.

The monkeys are very energetic and are always playing around and climbing. These two look like statues, but are very real.

We often saw the monkeys climbing over electric cables. Apparently they get an electric shock from time to time. They don’t seem to care though.

Here you can see one of the monkeys swinging from the outer coating of an electric cable. He seems to be having fun.

You’ll see monkeys like these all day long.

Finally, above is a video of a large group we saw messing around in what seemed like an office complex.
