Spend long enough in Bangkok and you’ll come across some amusing, funny and downright weird animals that you just wouldn’t expect to find in a city center. I lived in London for over 20 years, but I never saw a pig, rooster or turkey wandering around. But in Bangkok, I’ve seen all of these.

A Pig In Bangkok

The first time we saw this pig we were pretty amazed and wondered what it was doing there. Had it escaped from somewhere? Was it just living wild in the city? We had no idea. If you’ve been following the rescue of the Thai schoolkids that got trapped in a cave, you’ll know that the team is called Mu Pa, meaning wild boar. This is Bangkok’s very own mu pa.

But as we spent more time in the area we started to see the pig quite often. It’s always been asleep though. We have never seen it walking around.

The pig lives across the river from the pier near Saphan Taksin BTS station. You can get a cross-river ferry for 5 baht. When you get off you should see the pig. Above it’s asleep at the entrance to the pier.

One day we noticed that the pig wasn’t there, so we asked around to see if anyone knew what had happened to it. We managed to find the owner, who said it was her pet and that it had gone to bed. A bed is next to the banana stall, and this is where it spends the night.

A Turkey Living On A Food Soi

This one seemed a bit cruel, as we spotted a turkey that seemed to live in a very confined space at a food stall that sold grilled meats such as chicken and pork.

We wondered if the turkey was being fattened up ready to be cooked, but it turned out that, like the pig, this was also a pet. The owner was given it as a chick, and it had grown up at the shop. At night it’s taken into the shop, as the owner is worried that someone might steal it if it’s left outside.

A few weeks after first spotting the turkey, we saw it out and about.

And here it is with the owner. It is a very friendly turkey.

Chickens Outside 7-Eleven

Last week we spotted some chickens in cages outside our local 7-Eleven store. We asked the fruit seller what they were doing there, and she said that a tuk tuk driver had left them while he took some tourists sightseeing. He has said he had too many and was trying to find new owners for them.

A Rooster On The Loose

This rooster was at the bottom of the steps that lead up to Saphan Taksin BTS station. What was it doing there we wondered.

It turned out that rooster belonged to one of the van drivers and he had decided to bring it to work with him. The rooster was having a run around while the driver waited for passengers.

Monitor Lizard

We spotted this large monitor lizard alongside the canal that separates north and south Sathorn Road. We’ve also seen monitor lizards wandering around Lumphini Park.

Dog With Eyebrows

This is a soi dog that the locals feed. For some reason, it always has eyebrows drawn on it. It usually hangs around Pan Road near the 7-Eleven.

3-Tone Cat

This is the first time ever that I’ve seen a cat like this. It’s left front leg is ginger, it’s right front a leg sida, and face is tabby, and the rest is tortoiseshell. Three cats in one. Weird!

Frog Eating A Worm

We were having lunch in Bangkok one day when we noticed a frog also having lunch. It had a worm. Looked a bit like eating spaghetti.
