Bangkok To Lopburi By Train

Last week we decided to take a day trip from Bangkok to Lopburi to see the monkeys and visit a friend’s new cafe. It’s an easy journey of around 2 hours on the fast train, although you can get slower and cheaper trains if you want. Once you get to Lopburi you’ll need to see Things to do in Lopburi (Monkey City).

Train Times Bangkok To Lopburi

There are 16 trains a day from Bangkok to Lopburi, although we’d recommend getting one of the Special Express trains. These are the fastest ones and also have aircon. If you’re on a tight budget you can get one of the slower trains.

You can use the official railway site (http://www.railway.co.th/Home/Index) to check up to date train times and ticket prices.

For such a short journey (133 km) it’s usually ok to buy your ticket on the day from Hua Lamphong train station. We opted to to get the 08:30 train, and this cost us 374 baht ($11) each for a one-way ticket.

Our train’s final destination was Chiang Mai. We had a long wait, because the train was almost an hour late leaving the station. I’ve no idea what caused the delay.

Our train eventually arrived. Luckily it wasn’t too hot at the station, as it was still fairly early in the day.

The 2nd Class carriage with aircon looked like it had been recently refurbished, so it was quite comfortable. The aircon wasn’t too cold either, which is often the case with Thai trains. Pro tip: you might need a jacket if traveling on an aircon train in Thailand.

Not long after the train left Bangkok, we got served free coffee and a bun. This doesn’t happen on all trains though.

Arriving In Lopburi

Lopburi, which is nicknamed Monkey City, is a very small train station with just three platforms.

It’s not surprising that they have monkey statues on the station platforms. The one above is near the ticket office.

You will also see this money at the end of the platform. This really is Monkey City.

We bought our return tickets when we first arrived in Lopburi. They also cost 374 baht for a one-way 2nd class with aircon ticket. We opted for the 17:28 train, as that meant we had enough time to spend in Lopburi. The train was only a few minutes late.
