There’s no better place to spend a British summer than Brighton. Whether you’re there for a week or a day, there are plenty of things to do on this vibrant coastal town.

From the buzzing centre to the quieter countryside, there’s something for everyone. The best way of travelling to Brighton is by train, so make sure to plan your journey in advance to make the most out your trip.

With that in mind, here are ten things you can do for free in Brighton.

Brighton Palace Pier

The iconic pier is Brighton’s biggest tourist spot. The quintessentially Victorian pier is arguably one of Britain’s most famous landmarks outside of the capital. Once you’ve exhausted the old-school fairground rides, kickback and relax with some candyfloss or ice cream on one of the many deckchairs along the pier.

Brighton Beach

Stepping down from the pier, you’ll find yourself on the pebbly Brighton Beach. Here, you can relax with a view of the sea or take a dip in the sea – if you’re feeling brave enough

Pavilion Gardens

Not far from the beachfront is the Pavilion Gardens. The Regency era pavilion has beautiful gardens filled with lush shrubbery and flowers. Take a picnic and enjoy the live band music on a Monday afternoon followed by a stroll around the oriental pavilion itself and marvel at the Indian and Chinese influences in the architecture.

Brighton Marina

Away from the beachfront, you’ll find Brighton Marina. Here, there are restaurants and cafes lining the waterfront accompanied by free to use ping pong tables and giant chess boards. During the summer months, there’s also free screenings of things like opera and sporting events.

South Downs Natural Park

If you’re looking for something a little more active, take a trip out into the South Downs Natural Park. There are endless hiking and walking opportunities here including the white cliffs of the Seven Sisters. In the areayou’ll also find the Chattri War Memorial and the Jack and Jill windmills which make for great photo opportunities.

Devil’s Dyke

If it’s more walking that you’re after, than an expedition out to Devil’s Dyke will more than satisfy your itchy feet. On top of a large hill, Devil’s Dyke offers panoramic views of the Sussex countryside and the open sea. Plus, if you’re a bit of an adrenaline junkie, this is a great spot for some hand gliding.

Stanmer Park

Another countryside escape near Brighton, Stanmer Park is an ideal day out in nature. With plenty of woodlands, this is a great day out for a casual summer walk and a picnic. Also within the park is Stanmer House itself where you can enjoy little bit of British luxury with some afternoon tea.

Brighton Fishing Museum

Step back in time with a whimsical trip to the Brighton Fishing Museum. With endless photographs, films and artefacts, you’ll soon be a Brighton expert as you familiarise yourself with the towns fishing past.

Undercliff walks

If you’re travelling with four-legged friends, the Undercliff Walk should be a high priority. Starting in Brighton Marina, the walk is about five kilometres and ends at the Brighton and Hove City boundary. The cliffside walk gives you stunning oceanic views paired with the brisk sea air for a hearty afternoon out.

Rottingdean

Once you’ve scoped out most of Brighton’s best bits, head out to the picturesque village of Rottingdean. The historic village is just four miles from Brighton itself but has much quieter beaches that are backed by chalk cliffs and dotted with rock pools.
